Ideas for Landscaping Around Your Pool

A pergola or arbor is a great way to compliment a backyard living environment or provide some shade to an outdoor kitchen. While many of these structures are fairly easy to build on your own, their real beauty comes with the addition of climbing plants and flowers. Start your poolside landscaping with the help of these beautiful and fragrant pergola plants.
In no particular order, here are six favorite plants for pergola and arbor cover.

1.     Climbing roses. Traditional and providing a sweet scent, climbing rose varieties offer shade and fragrance. They are a top choice for more traditional gardens.

2.     Honeysuckle. This twining climber will quickly move its way up your arbor or pergola. It provides ample shade once established and offers a sweet smelling bloom that will thrive in semi-shaded areas. Honeysuckle can also thrive when trained with other climbing plants like climbing roses.

3.     Jasmine. This fragrant climber comes in several varieties and is a top choice due to its ability to grow quickly, thrive when trained with other climbing plants, and sweet scented blooms which flower from mid-summer to early fall.

4.     Sweet peas. This sweet smelling fragrant climber produces a beautiful purplish bloom when in season. When in bloom they are potent and can also be cut to be brought in the home so that the sweet smell can fill a room.

5.     Clematis Montana. This climbing plant is very vigorous and will quickly cover the trellis wall of your arbor or pergola. It begins producing beautiful blooms in late spring that have an almond scent.

6.     Wisteria. This cross between a vine and a shrub takes longer to cultivate but it produces beautiful cascading clusters of flowers in a variety of colors that provide a sweet scent and ample coverage for your arbor or pergola. If you select Wisteria you will need to monitor it closely as it can become invasive and heavy, causing damage to your outdoor structure.

When deciding which climbing plant (or plants) to use to cover your arbor or pergola you will want to consider how rapidly you want it to cover your structure, which color blooms you prefer to compliment your outdoor area, and if you prefer a sweet or heady fragrance. You will also want to think about the hardiness of the plant and the amount of sun available.

Now all that’s left is deciding on your favorite plants for your new patio or deck cover. Enjoy!

How to Choose a Pool Builder
Your pool will be an important part of your life and a wonderful investment in your home. So take the time to find just the right pool builder for your lifestyle and your family.

How to start? Ask friends, neighbors and acquaintances to recommend a pool builder they’ve worked with. Check social media and review sites to identify well-regarded builders. And finally, look at builders’ websites to see examples of their work. Once you’ve identified three or four potential builders, start asking questions!

Experience Counts: How much experience building pools does the potential builder have? Some builders have been in the “pool business” for years (retail or service) but have little construction experience. Some have been “in business” (other businesses) for years, but only recently decided to build pools. Ask if they have owned a pool company under another name or if they have owned a pool company in another city or state.

Service vs. Construction: Builders that also provide weekly service contracts will often think of your pool as one phase of a long-term relationship. They may be more motivated to provide great customer service during the building phase.

Keeping you informed: Is the construction team easily contacted and responsive?

References tell the real story: Ask for names of both recent and older customers. Call and ask about the client’s overall experience. Were the issues resolved quickly and without hassle? Would the client use this builder again without hesitation? If possible, see the pool in person.

Safety and Knowledge: Is the potential builder knowledgeable about safety features and are those features part of the pool design? Is the builder familiar with building codes, building standards and best practices? Many jurisdictions have minimal requirements for pool construction, so make sure the builder builds to national standards.

Affiliation matters: Membership tells a story. Businesses that value long-term relationships are more likely to support organizations that seek to improve the whole industry and protect the pool owner. Their success is built not just on their own reputation, but upon the industry reputation as well.

There are several national professional organizations for pool professionals, as well as local business organizations that exist to help builders improve their professionalism. Those organizations include:
  • The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (Regional or National )
  • National Plasterer’s Council (if you are buying a concrete pool)

In addition, there are local groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau.

Go with your gut: Once you’ve considered the foregoing factors, how do you feel about working with the builder? Has he or she explained the building process and are you comfortable with it? Have you met the staff that will be in your yard day in and day out?
Finally, here are some “red flags” to watch for as you talk to builders and narrow down the candidates. Avoid those who:

1.  Insist on cash payments
  1. Don’t understand soil characteristics and how they affect concrete structures
  2. Can’t answer questions on drowning prevention
  3. Won’t provide a contract that specifies materials and equipment
  4. Won’t provide written warranties
  5. Won’t provide proof of insurance

You need to carefully consider the services and products they offer and their prices. It would also be advisable to make a comparison among contractors to determine which contractor offers a far better deal. Making your decision, it would help to keep a checklist of your preferences and personal needs. Check if the contractor meets your requirements. Other than this, here are other tips you can check when considering the right pool to install in your home.

Swimming Pool Accident Liability

Press Ctrl. & click the following link:

Swimming pools can be such a joy in the summer. You can tan, exercise, hang out, and just relax around the water. Some people choose to build a personal pool at home for these reasons. Others opt for the community pool instead. Either way, swimming pools are actually ripe with danger to you and and those you love. However, it is not always clear as to who is liable for those accidents. This article will look at some hazards around the pool and who might be responsible for the tragedies that can arise.

There are a number of things that can happen in the water or poolside, including drowning or near-drowning, slips and falls, disembowelment, diving board injuries, and others. There are also a variety of people who can be held liable for accidents that happen around a pool, including the injured himself, a caregiver or parent, the owner of the pool, the construction company who built the pool, etc. Depending on what the actual accident entailed, there might be no one held liable or up to several people held responsible for the accident.

According to premises liability laws, the owner of a pool, whether it is a personal pool or that of a neighborhood, hotel, gym, etc., is in charge of maintaining the health and safety standards at a pool. This includes making sure that everything is working properly, the chemicals are properly balanced, nothing is broken or rusty, and other issues. However, an owner of a pool may not know if the company who built the pool did not properly grade a deck, leading to water buildup and an extra slippery surface.

Someone who is invited or licensed to be at a pool should expect the pool to be safe. If one of these guests is injured, they are less likely to be held liable for their own accident than a trespasser. If someone breaks into a pool uninvited and sustains an injury, they may not get any financial compensation for an injury. For instance, a homeowner may lock up his own pool because it is in the process of draining. If a person breaks into the pool and decides to trespass and swim, they can get disemboweled by the drain. However, the homeowner had the pool closed up expressly for protecting people from the drain.

Of course, a swimming pool owner is supposed to properly maintain his or her drain. If it is not covered or is turned up too strong when guests come over, the owner may be held liable if someone gets injured due to its suction. At community pools, improperly trained lifeguards and broken things in or around the pool can cause harm to someone, and they are usually the responsibility of the homeowner's association or whoever owns the community pool.

When going swimming, either at your own pool, that of a friend, or at the neighborhood spot, the best idea is to be smart about your fun. If you are bringing young children to the swim, be sure to keep a close eye on them to help keep the safe.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a swimming pool accident, the owner or builder may be held liable for the damages. For more information on swimming pool dangers and other topics in personal injury, check out Vic Feazell, an Austin expert personal injury lawyer.
